The Island of Kadavu is away from the busyness of life. It is the fourth largest island in Fiji and is 45miles South of Suva the capital of Fiji. The population of Kadavu is about 12,000 and they still live quite traditionally with about 72 villages scattered throughout the island. Vunisea is the only town on the island with an airport, post office, hospital, police station and boarding school. Transport on the island is mainly by boat as there are few roads.

JDESCRIPTION OF KADAVU

The island of Kadavu is unspoiled and unique. It is mostly undeveloped which means that the island is still in its natural pristine and untouched state. It is surrounded by coral reefs, sandy beaches, rugged terrains with extinct volcanoes and streams. Kadavu has the world's fourth largest barrier reef and is rated as one of the world's premier diving locations. It has countless miles of virgin coral reefs and breathtaking underwater experiences. Kadavu offers an unparelled range of quality dive sites making it one of Fiji's best known aquatic playgrounds. The sheer diversity of life on Fijian reefs is overwhelming.

Kadavu is a volcanic island. The vegetation on the island is mostly tropical with hillsides generally covered with trees and grasslands. The coastal areas or beachline are more densely covered with voivoi (indigenous plant) trees, pandanus trees and coconut trees. With its rich vegetation the iguana, an endangered species, was spotted in Kadavu on one of our team visits to the island. Kadavu has a great deal of terrestrial flora and fauna of interest, particularly the birds. Elusive multi-hued native birds are normally found high in the forest canopy and the endangered colorful Kadavu Parrot, which is now a protected species, can be easily observed.

Fiji has a tropical maritime climate, tempered by the ocean and trade wind experiencing without great extremes of hot or cold. The best months being March through to November. Maximum tempertures rarely move out of the 26° to 31° range all year around. Winter is a term, not a season. The wet season is from November to April. Cyclones when they strike are mostly confined to the period November to April.

The Fiji islands are also known for the Hub of the South Pacific as we are located between Hawaii and Australia. Fiji is served by both international and domestic air services. The two international arrival points are Nadi, on the western side and Nausori on the East Coast of Viti levu near Suva. You can get to Nadi Airport from most parts of the world with air carriers such as Qantas, Air Pacific, Virqin Blue, Korean Airlines and Air New Zealand. Kadavu Island is serviced from Nadi and also at Nausori Airport which is located near the capital of Fiji, Suva. The plane ride from both destinations takes about 30 minutes to Kadavu. Getting around Fiji by air is easy with most places being served by an airport or airstrip. You also have the opportunity of chartering a seaplane or a helicopter from mainland Viti Levu to Kadavu/location.
